CHARACTER INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Dru Anderson
SERIES: Strange Angels - Lili St. Crow
CHARACTER AGE: 16
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Including this area seeing as she's a Book Muse.

"Better to be strong than pretty and useless."

Dru describes herself as having dark, washed out curly hair, her fathers rangy looks and a 'better copy' of his blue eyes. Along with her grandmothers beaky nose, Dru 'reckons' she's in that gawky stage that happens to most girls only she doesn't think she'll ever grow out of hers.

She isn't your typical pretty girl; the kind you'd expect to see on the cheerleading squad or getting nominated for Homecoming Queen but she's not half as plain as she thinks she is.

Years of practising her Kata's (Tai Chi) has given Dru a toned, if not athletic build. She's rarely seen out a pair of combat boots and jeans, her clothes always leaning towards practical rather then pretty. It's unlikely she's worn a dress or a skirt since she learned to say the word 'No' and she's not the kind to bother with make-up.

N.B: Dru's canon point is before she blooms however; Blooming for a Svetocha comes with age and as she's 16, she'll be given serums to be physically aged up. If being aged up triggers her blooming, her appearance would change in the following ways;

Dru's once frizzy hair turns into perfect ringlets that spill down her back and the youthful pudginess of her face disappears, leaving high cheek bones in their place. She would find herself several inches taller, her stick like figure now curved from womanhood and her skin, once marred by the occasional outbreak you expect with a teenager is clear and healthy looking, almost shining. With the blooming comes the scent of fresh, warm bread, Dru describing herself as smelling like the inside of a bakery.

REFERENCE: There really isn't a lot in the way of (decent) references for this series so I'll leave a bunch of links here but have given some history/canon glimpses in her personality section just to give an overall feel of the series.

CANON POINT: Book 2 (Betrayals) Chapter 18.

SEXUALITY: Heterosexual. Through-out the series, Dru has only been shown to have romantic interests in the opposite sex (Graves & Christophe). Because of the world she is in, her interactions with the same sex are minimal though nothing at all hints that she considers them in a sexual nature.

PERSONALITY: In her early childhood years, there was nothing about Dru Anderson's life that could be described as interesting or even remotely eventful. Until the day her Mom gathered her up and took her to a closet, telling her daughter they were going to play a game. She tucked the five year old Dru into a nest of blankets and stuffed toys, made her promise to be quiet before shutting the door.

This would be the last time Dru would ever see her mother.

Not unlike the TV Show; Supernatural, Dru lives in a world where most people are oblivious to the things that go on around them. All that stuff that goes bump in the night; suckers, poltergeists, even zombies? They read about them in books or see them in movies when they want to give themselves a good scare. Those people thought they were safe in their beds at night because there was no such thing as a Vampire or a person who could turn into a wolf, right?

They belong to what Dru calls the Normal World. Dru Anderson now lives in the Real World.

Being hard-headed and fiercely independent is kind of expected when you look back on the life Dru has lead. After the death of her Mom, then her Gran and spending a life on the move with her Hunter Dad, Dru has pretty much had to raise herself. It doesn't come naturally to her to let others take care of her, not unless that person was her dad and even before a Sucker used Necromancy to turn him into a Zombie, Dwight Anderson's idea of parenting was more likely to involve teaching his teenage daughter how to pack rock salt into shotgun shells. Orders were more likely than kind words but given the near constant danger the hunting life put them in, there just wasn't time for coddling. Coddling got you dead.

Worldy in ways that few teenagers are, Dru has learned how to make herself practically invisible, even as a perpetual new girl in high school. She understand the importance of not raising any red flags with the authorities which is pretty much the only reason why she doesn't cut school too often. With her Dad away on hunting trips a lot of the time, she's perfectly at ease managing the rent and bills. She's picked up her Dad's taste for Jim Beam, his propensity to cuss like a sailor and her diet of take-out and cereal would shock many a parent but Hunters don't live the way other people do. One of the only hobbies Dru has that some people might see as normal is her natural inclination towards art.

Though Dru will insist she doesn't have an accent, the six year stretch she spent living with her Gran in the Appalachia's has given her the hint of a southern drawl and being raised by her Dad in her latter years, she has a habit of using military terms and has picked up a lot of Dwight Anderson's tendencies, like making her bed with military corners, always having a bug out bag in case she needs to cut and run in a hurry or finding the oldies station on the radio to the car whenever they drive into a new town.

Her life on the move has turned Dru into the kind of girl who doesn't make friends easily; What's the point when you know you're going to be skipping town at a moments notice? As such, her social skills are a little lacking and she's not the greatest when it comes to making small talk, preferring comfortable silence to incessant chatter and has little patience when dealing with people who don't understand the Real World. This can lead her to be abrasive and even condescending, traits she inherited from her dad. She can't relate to the typical problems of your average teenager and she cares as much about homework and school as she does for things like celebrity gossip or whether the cute guy might ask her to the dance. It's not like she's going to be going to college, she's going to be a Hunter like her dad.

At least, she was. There aren't a lot of people who hunt things in the Real World when they're part of the Real World themselves, though Dru's still getting used to that reality.

Even before learning that like her mother, Dru was Svetocha, she wasn't exactly what you'd call normal. Gifted with special abilities, The Touch as her Gran called it, Dru learned to ward rooms with her mind to keep the bad things out, laying down invisible blue lines of psychic energy that dark and twisted things like Suckers couldn't pass. When trouble is coming she'd get the taste of waxen oranges and salt in her mouth and one time, when being blasted by a teacher, she accidentally hexed the woman, damn near killing her.

Others might find this crazy but Dru's never known any different. She already knows she's not like other people but sincerely believes she's better for it. An outsider wherever she's been, her tone throughout the series suggests that this isn't something that has left her feeling like she's missing out. The somewhat patronising way that she refers to Graves as kid during their early interactions, an indication that in being who and what she is, she believes she's the lucky one and they're the suckers (metaphorical, not the Nosferat) of the world.

Life has gotten pretty damn complicated for Dru. Her Dad was killed, the new kid who kept trying to make friends with her got himself bitten by a Wulfen and the mysterious yet good-looking Christophe turned up smelling like warm Apple Pie and trying to convince Dru that not only is she part Sucker, but as a female (Svetocha: One Sixteenth Nosferat), she's incredibly rare and equally deadly to the Nosferat (Full blooded Vampires). All this happened in less than a week so Dru has a fair share of new issues to work through on top of the ones she's built up over the last sixteen years.

She has yet to really process what it's supposed to mean, not even having a chance to grieve the loss of her Dad. She copes with the latter as best she can, keeping busy (whether she likes it or not) and pushing through the emotional pain. She takes comfort in hearing his voice in her head, particularly during times of high stress. Even dead, an imaginary version of her Dad barks gravelly orders at her. Dru struggles, and will continue to struggle with the secrets her Dad kept from her. She has a lot of questions and though others might have the answers, the inherently untrusting girl doesn't know who to turn to.

Unexpectedly, she doesn't feel betrayed by him. Perhaps because there's no point being mad at the dead, but also because she saw what losing her Mom did to Dwight Anderson. She truly believes he was trying to protect her the best way he knew how. He never wanted Dru to be a part of the world of Djamphir and Svetocha and he didn't his only child to befall the same fate as her mother. Plus with Graves depending on her to keep them both safe, Dru hasn't had too much time to be lost or angry.

Known to her only as Graves, the 'kid' she affectionately thinks of as Goth-Boy is perhaps the first friend Dru has ever made. Her initial instinct is to keep him at arms length, trying to shake him off from the moment they cross paths but Graves is persistent where she's concerned and he's there for her when she literally has nobody else. Graves is good for Dru because he's not afraid to call her on her bullshit. He didn't have a Dad who was Military, turned Hunter. Orders weren't something to be obeyed to him, they were to be questioned. The more she pushes him away, the more he pushes back and a mixture of circumstance and complimentary personalities sees them working just as well as they clash half the time.

Graves has shown a slight romantic interest in Dru (that grows throughout the series) but Dru seems pretty oblivious to it for now. She has bigger worries than whether Goth-Boy wants to get in her pants or not but more than that, Dru needs a person to be painfully obvious about their intent when it comes to anything like this. Her experiences with the opposite sex isn't much more than some heavy make-out sessions with random guys she knows she has no future with.

The other key person in Dru's life these days is one she doesn't know whether to trust or not; Christophe Reynard. Their relationship was off to a pretty bad start when Dru mistook him for the Sucker who killed her father, but several altercations and a heated exchange later, Dru not only learns that Christophe is Djamphir, but that he had known her mother when she was Dru's age.

Christophe's attitude towards Human Hunters and Wulfen bristles Dru and there is a definite fire that exists between them, one that borders on attraction. Christophe's irritating qualities aside, he comes into Dru's life at a time when she is desperate for somebody to take control, to give her orders the way her Dad had and Christophe provides her that. His understanding of the Real World makes him somebody she wants to trust, even if she's not quite there yet and the fact that he knew her mother? Dru needs Christophe (whether Graves likes it or not). Her gives her a sense of stability and he has answers that she'll never be able to find in a book.

POWERS:

  • T H E . T O U C H

Similar to having a natural inclination towards Witchcraft and Psychic Abilities, better known in her world as Folk Magic.

Auras: Dru gets the taste of waxen oranges and salt in her mouth, similar to what some people experience before getting a Migraine, when something is about to happen, be it danger approaching or she's about to see somebody she hasn't seen in a long time.
Dreams: Dru has shown the ability in canon to dream about things that have happened, or are actually happening
Hexes: Wishing ill will on another person usually does nothing more than make you feel better but to those with the touch, it can have deadly repercussions. She's only ever done it a couple of times in canon and doesn't know how to control it but if Dru is highly emotional and provoked, she can Hex a person.
Warding: Dru can ward a room or even house so that certain supernatural creatures can not come in.

  • S V E T O C H A

A person who is one sixteenth (No more, no less) Nosferat. Because Dru is doubley rare as a Svetocha born to a Svetocha, with the right training Dru would only need to breathe near a Nosferat to kill them.

Blood: When bloomed, a Svetocha's blood is toxic (deadly) to Nosferat when consumed and even breathing the air when her blood has been spilled will cause them damage, even kill a younger Nosferat or an older one as she grows in age and strength.
Pre-Bloomed Blood: The 'Happy Stuff' (her words) in Dru's blood is particularly attractive to both Djamphir and Nosferat. A Nosferat will gain great strength from the blood of a pre-bloomed Svetocha whereas a Djamphir will be overcome with an almost irresistible hunger if her blood is spilled in their presence.
Aspect: When using abilities such as her super-human speed, Dru takes on the Aspect of the Nosferat. Blonde streaks slide through her hair like rolling oil that slips around her dark ringlets and sharp canines extend from her upper and lower jaw while her blue eyes practically glow an intense, bright, blue that is flecked with gold and ringed in violet.
Blood Hunger: Triggered by spilled blood or even anger, though Svetocha are not required to drink blood to survive, they do suffer from The Hunger. If they drink blood, the blood hunger becomes harder to control and they can become something known as the Scourge, considered worse than a Nosferat as, unlike Nosferat, they are not born evil.
Speed: It's described as the world around her coming to almost a complete halt while Dru is moving at normal speed.
Long Life: It's never said quite how long a Svetocha can live, but once bloomed they are seemingly immortal. If not ageless, they at least have decelerated aging. The only clear knowledge on this, aside from hints in canon, Dru reads in a book that says; "Djamphir are long-lived, possibly immortal."
Scent: Each Svetocha has a scent that is unique to them, that is much stronger when taking on the Aspect of the Nosferat. In Dru's case, she smells like warm, freshly baked bread.
Death: A Svetocha or Djamphir can be killed by a Hawthorn stake through the heart.
Familiar: What Dru has always thought of as relating to The Touch, is in fact an animal Familiar that a Svetocha has, hers an Owl that seemingly appears out of nowhere. It can guide her in small ways, the feel of feathers against her cheek when warning her not to say something, guide her away from danger by showing her a safe escape route or even swoop in and attack an enemy on her behalf.
Blood Drinking: Svetocha and Djamphirs don't drink blood as a rule, however, doing so will act as a boost to their abilities as well as heal any injuries they may have.
Blood Bonding: If a Svetocha or Djamphir drinks more than three pulls of blood from a person, it bonds that individual to them.
Weather Manipulation: While a powerful Nosferat such as Sergej can create storms so intense they cover the sky with dark clouds that practically turn day into night, one of the Kuroi (Svetocha & Djamphir) can do minor weather manipulation, such as a blood fog that not only provides visual cover but can mask the scent of a person making them difficult to track while in it.

  • H U N T E R

Dru has a pretty solid knowledge of all things supernatural and how to kill them. She's learned everything from how to undo a Hex cast by a voodoo priest to making homemade shotgun shells packed with rocksalt and how to take a part and clean a gun.

SUITABILITY: Suitability and Dru is as complicated as it is simple. She's shown her ability to adapt to the unusual and constant changes in her life but at her canon point, she hasn't been shown as a particularly sexual character, not because she has a fear of sex but because the life she has led to date hasn't exactly allowed her many opportunities to explore this side of herself.

Dru's stubborn nature will mean that early on at least, she'll try to refuse to participate in the experiments but just as soon as she realizes what will happen when she doesn't, she'll want to take control rather than have a bunch of scientists pulling her strings. She's not a character that places a heavy emphasis on love having to go hand in hand in sex so despite her age, the prospect of having to be sexually active would be far less disturbing to her than the idea that the chip could dose her to lower her inhibitions.

If having to shoot her zombie-fied father didn't destroy her, Proxima isn't about to either and if anything, it will provide her with an opportunity to stop, take stock of everything that has happened and potentially heal and forge actual relationships because the mere premise of the game means she can't keep people at arms length if she wants to stay in control. More than that, being able to stay in one place for a while means she won't need to.

FIRST PERSON EXAMPLE: Questionnaire option is the best thing I've seen on an app in forever!

What do you think is your best feature or characteristic? I got Dad's eyes so probably that.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring and why? No, you can not bring a boat. Gran's box of herbs with her Rowan wand in it, the biggest container of holy water I can carry and a bag of rock salt

Do you prefer fresh air or air conditioning? Why? Fresh air. You haul up in a stinking hot apartment in the middle of summer for three months straight and tell me you wouldn't prefer fresh air to air con.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Replace the windscreen on Dad's truck.

If you were any animal, what would you be? You don't wish to be an animal unless you're an idiot and nothing will save you if you come face to face with a broken Wulfen. I'll stick with what I am.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? How to control The Touch.

Have you ever had something happen to you that you thought was bad but it turned out for the best? Most bad things that happen, stay bad in my experience.

What was the last experience that made you a stronger person? Dad. [Yep. That's all she'd write. It's not something Dru is willing to talk about, even a little bit.]

    THIRD PERSON EXAMPLE:

    Oh shit.

She'd finally lost her mind. In movies this was where they put crazy people wasn't it? A box of a room with white walls and a window to observe them. Sure, this was a lot nicer in than the asylums Dru saw in the B-grade movies watched while her Dad was out on a job but she guessed if The Schola had found the need to drop her off at the looney bin then they would have made sure it was a good one. She was one of their precious Svetocha afterall.

Unless... No. If Sergej had found her, he wouldn't have locked her up. He would have drained her on the spot.

Then strung you up in a tree like he had your Mom.

Dru grabbed that unpleasant thought with both hands and wrestled it to the back of her brain. There, it would lay in wait, ready to pounce again at a moment she least wanted or expected. It had good company in the dark recesses of her mind, buried alongside thoughts of Gran, of Dad, the memory of the tap tap tap at the window and the blue eyes that she would have known anywhere.

Whatcha gonna do now Dru Girl? Dad's voice, gruff, warm and familiar rose up through the confusion that swirled in her head. Don't just sit there like a bump on a log.

Dru didn't move though, for once ignoring the imagined advice as she looked around the box. It was too small, cold, clinical to call it a room. The sterile smell pressed at the spot in the back of her throat that regular people didn't have, like she'd taken a shot of bleach and a thought more unsettling than everything else she'd considered since waking up started to plant roots in her head.

It might have only been a month, but Dru knew she'd been away from the Normal World too long when Humans were her last and not her first thought. If Hunters knew about the Real World then why not Scientists? Doctors, fuck the Government even. Would it have been that hard to send in Marines like her Dad had once been as the Schola slept? Gas all the rooms. Carry away the limp bodies of drugged Wulfen, Djamphirs and one, lone Svetocha.

She should have registered it the moment she'd opened her eyes, the waxy, citrus tang of oranges coating the roof of her mouth, so intense now she wanted to gag, to spit the taste from her mouth for all the good it would do but a sharp pain in her neck stopped that thought dead in its tracks.

Dru's hand clamped over her neck, feeling something hard at the surface before it buried its way too deep for her to touch. Relief flooded her for only the length of two heartbeats, the clawing taste of rotting fruit fading before dread settled in her stomach like an ice block that refused to melt. Whatever had just happened to her neck can't have been good, not if she'd had an Aura but hopefully or not, she was about to find out just how not good it really was as the window she was sure people were observing her through flickered and a video began to play.
